Sapah is actually the sister village of Semawak. Some decades ago, the people of Sapah and Semawak are from the same mother village (also known as Sapah). However, it was then there was a period when deaths keep occurring among the people of the village. Hence, believing that misfortune has befallen on the place (this event is also known as “temawai angan” in Iban), the villagers decided to move to new places to avoid the misfortune. Some of the villages decided to move further while others wants to stay near by. And so, the villagers are divided into two new groups. One forming the new Sapah and the rest built Semawak.
